I used a bright floral background to create a juxtaposition within my subject and its background, to emphasize the uncomfortable nature of the images.
Instead of having full body shots, I took images of different parts of the dolls body to reflect on how she is a representation of a figure that the viewer has control over. I did this so that one could reassemble her body, enabling the viewer to create distortion. I thought that by allowing the viewer to have control over the compiling of the doll, then this would reflect on my idea that women are still at the will of men.

For my first project of this A2 year, we were allowed to choose any subject that interested us. At first it was very daunting having a seven month project that would be entirely independent, however, when I discovered that what I wanted to approach in my work was feminism, I became very confident that this was an issue that would enable me to truly develop my work and ideas.
To begin with I researched artists such as Hans Bellmer and his Dolls, and Andre Masons "mannequin" from the surrealist show, "Exposition Internationale du Surrealism." Although these works and artists don't really have anything to do with feminism, these particular pieces of Art provoked my opinion on feminism, and pushed me to have stronger thoughts on the subject.
The fact that so many continue to view women as mindless objects in a patriarchal society began to prey on my mind, and I couldn't believe how oblivious I had been to it all. Even the coca cola adverts before Ugly Betty are representing women as materialistically obsessed puppets.
And so with a strong opinion to back my work up, I began to think of how I could capture this within my work. And so I began by taking images of a childhood doll tied up with ribbon and rope. I used this shoot as a starting point for my work.
